I Lost $47K in Crypto Before I Turned 25 — Here Are the 10 Mistakes I'll Never Make Again

Mistake 1: Buying because the price was "cheap" I bought LUNA at $40 because it was "down 60% from ATH — it's on sale!" It went to $0.00001. A stock being down 60% might mean it's cheap. A crypto being down 60% might mean it's on its way to zero. Lesson: Price is not value. Look at fundamentals, not discounts.

Mistake 2: Using leverage as a beginner I 10x longed ETH at $3,200 because I was "sure" it was going to $5K. Got liquidated on a 9% dip that recovered within 24 hours. Lost: $4,200 Lesson: Leverage doesn't increase your returns. It increases the speed at which you go to zero.

Mistake 3: Not using a hardware wallet Kept $22K on a hot wallet. Phone got compromised through a fake MetaMask update. All gone in one transaction. Irreversible. A Ledger costs $79. I lost 278x that amount being lazy. Lesson: If it's more than you'd carry in cash, put it in cold storage. Period.

Mistake 4: FOMO buying at the top Bought SOL at $260 in November 2024 because "everyone" was talking about it. It dropped to $120 within 6 weeks. The rule: If your Uber driver is talking about a coin, you're already late. Lesson: The time to buy is when nobody's talking about it. The time to sell is when everybody is.

Mistake 5: Ignoring taxes Made 200+ trades in 2024. Didn't track any of them. Tax bill: $8,400 — on gains I'd already lost in the bear market. In most countries, EVERY trade is a taxable event. Yes, even crypto-to-crypto swaps. Lesson: Use Koinly or CoinTracker from day 1. Not day 365.

Mistake 6: Following influencer calls Bought 3 tokens because YouTube influencers were "bullish." What I didn't know: they were paid to promote them. All three lost 80%+. If someone is shouting about a token, ask yourself: "How are THEY making money from me seeing this?" Lesson: Everyone talking about crypto has an agenda. Including me.

Mistake 7: Not taking profits Had $12K in unrealized gains on a memecoin. Didn't sell because "it's going higher." It didn't. Final value: $340. The rule I use now: When a position 3x's, sell 50%. You lock in profit and still have upside. Lesson: Unrealized gains are not real gains until you click sell.

Mistake 8: Overcomplicating my portfolio At one point I held 23 different tokens. I couldn't track any of them properly. Now I hold 4-6 max. I know each one inside out. Warren Buffett was right: Diversification is protection against ignorance. If you know what you're doing, you don't need 20 positions.
